BODEGA EL PENITENTE
The legend has it that at some midnights in Puerto de la Cruz, the fishermen used to see a far away light coming from a window of the old monastery, indicating that a penitent monk was praying.
And so we named the wine cellars producing our wines El Penitente, which is the fruit of a vintage tradition founded by García Núñez family on the down hills of the Orotava Valley.
This wine saga started in 1939 when Don Casiano García, the patriarch of the family and father of Don Americo García, began elaborating a good wine to be sold at the roadside grocery that he managed.
In this way, Don Casiano founded a rich family tradition that was kept alive for many years and which reached its climax in 1998 with the creation of Bodegas El Penitente.
It produces such good wines as Arautava, Bodegas de Miranda, Cruz del Teide y Tanganillo.
The word terruño refers to the volcanic origin of the ground, the sun and rain, heat and trade winds coming from the ocean close by.
Thanks to the exceptional microclimate, we are reviving the wine tradition that gave reputation to the wines of the Orotava valley during the XVII th century.
The stamp of the Regulatory Council of the region is printed on every bottle.
The maturation processes are carried out in casks of French and American oak.
The winery is structured in two levels that allow to use the gravity force for the handling of the grape juice.
The wines are elaborated from Listan, Albillo and Verdello varietals. The Malvasia varietal is cultivated in the new farm of San Clemente which is located on a fertile cliff facing the ocean Atlantic.
There we are reviving two varietals of great tradition as well: Tintilla Castellana and black Vijariego.
The García Núñez family pays an attentive care to the vineyards all year round, from pruning to harvesting.
