DO Valle de La Orotava
Valle de La Orotava in the XV century was one of the first regions, where there were vines. In the late nineteenth century the vineyards were gradually reduced and replaced by banana plantations. But the popularity of these wines DO again leads to the expansion of vineyards.
DO Valle de La Orotava is 676 hectares and consists of 23 wineries. This is a prolific area located in the North West of Tenerife. Today, thanks to tourism, demand for local wine is growing, production is increased, and the quality of the wines increases.
The soil of this region is 20% clay, 70% volcanic and 10% consists of remnants of volcanic rocks.
Wine light, permeable, tasty and rich with nutrients with an acidity corresponding to the volcanic nature of the island.
Characteristic for this zone cloudiness contributes to the ripening of the grapes the special taste. The trade winds bring moisture throughout the year, refreshing the environment in which the vine is grown, and softening temperature.
In most wineries use modern equipment with stainless steel, although also used the method of barrel fermentation. White wine makes up the bulk of wine production DO Valle de La Orotava and is made from varieties of Listan Blanco, Gual and Vijariego.
Local wineries also use innovative wine технологиb in the production of aromatic red wines with a short ageing period (less than six months) in barrels of American oak. This wine is a beautiful ruby color with a subtle fruity aroma. Some bodega in the region produce sweet, fortified wines and sparkling wines.
